Dressing Aids for Elderly People, Disability & Post-Surgery Recovery

Dressing aids are tools designed to help people get dressed independently when reduced mobility, arthritis, surgery recovery, or disability makes standard dressing difficult or painful. They're used in homes, aged care facilities, and rehabilitation settings across Australia, and are commonly recommended by occupational therapists as part of an independence-at-home plan.

For older Australians who want to stay living at home, dressing aids can be the difference between managing your own morning routine and needing daily carer assistance. That's not a small thing.

What types of dressing aids are available?

Our range covers the most common dressing challenges:

  • Sock and stocking aids, including the Dorking Stocking Aid and Terry Cloth Sock Aid, allow you to put on socks and stockings without bending down.
  • The Sock Aid Helper frame offers additional stability for those who need it.
  • Long-handled shoehorns in both chromed steel and rubber-grip versions let you put shoes on without stooping.
  • The ADL Leg Lifter Standard assists with getting legs in and out of bed, a chair, or a car. White elastic shoe laces convert any lace-up into a slip-on.
  • Dressing sticks help push and pull clothing on and off without straining.
  • Zipper aids assist anyone who finds small fastenings difficult to grip.

Who benefits most from dressing aids?

Dressing aids are suited to older Australians managing age-related mobility changes, people with arthritis or limited hand strength, anyone recovering from hip, knee, or shoulder surgery, people living with a disability that affects upper or lower body movement, and carers supporting a family member with daily dressing.

Do I need a prescription or referral to buy dressing aids?

No. Most dressing aids can be purchased directly without a prescription or referral. However, if you're purchasing through NDIS funding or a Home Care Package, an occupational therapist may need to recommend specific items. An OT assessment is also worth considering if you're unsure which products will best suit your situation.

Can I use NDIS or Home Care Package funding for dressing aids?

Many dressing aids are eligible as daily living assistive technology under the NDIS, and may also be fundable through a Home Care Package via My Aged Care. Eligibility depends on your individual plan and how the items relate to your disability or care goals. We recommend checking with your support coordinator or plan manager before purchasing.
