A Rapid Antigen Test is a single-use, quick screening test kit intended to detect coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 by using either a nasal swab sample or saliva, the test detects the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19. This test is designed for home use with self-collected oral fluid samples in individuals who are suspected of COVID-19.

This test is not as precise as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, but works 

by reacting to proteins on the surface of the virus called antigens in 10 to 20 minutes. COVID-19 can only be diagnosed using a PCR test. However, regular rapid antigen tests can also help someone pick up the COVID-19 virus very early in the infection, sometimes even before you have symptoms.

Rapid antigen self-tests are also most reliable when used by someone who has the symptoms of COVID-19. 

If a participant tests positive with a home use COVID-19 test, it is then recommended for the individual to get a confirmatory PCR test as soon as possible to determine if the virus is  actually present.

Countries in Europe such as Germany and the United Kingdom have already implemented the test to the general public since March of this year. The federal government of Germany has been supplying these tests and covering the costs.
