What Are Rapid Antigen Test Kits?

What Are Rapid Antigen Test Kits?

A Rapid Antigen Test is a single-use, quick screening test kit intended to detect coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 by using either a nasal swab sample or saliva, the test detects the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19. This test is designed for home use with self-collected oral fluid samples in individuals who are suspected of COVID-19.

This test is not as precise as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, but works

by reacting to proteins on the surface of the virus called antigens in 10 to 20 minutes. COVID-19 can only be diagnosed using a PCR test. However, regular rapid antigen tests can also help someone pick up the COVID-19 virus very early in the infection, sometimes even before you have symptoms.

How do the tests work?

Home use rapid antigen tests are available for the general public from November 1st These tests can be used by people at home, workplaces or anywhere and don’t require the supervision or involvement of a health practitioner. Rapid antigen self-tests are also most reliable when used by someone who has the symptoms of COVID-19.

If a participant tests positive with a home use COVID-19 test, it is then recommended for the individual to get a confirmatory PCR test as soon as possible to determine if the virus is  actually present.

Rapid Antigen Tests Globally

Countries in Europe such as Germany and the United Kingdom have already implemented the test to the general public since March of this year. The federal government of Germany has been supplying these tests and covering the costs. With the use of these tests, Germany has been able to achieve and identify the virus in individuals at an earlier stage than those countries who are just administering PCR tests, saving many businesses from closures and treating individuals for the virus sooner.
